K&H Heated Cat Bed Review: Why It Feels Cold Until Your Cat Lies Down

How this K&H heated cat bed review was made: I haven’t used this bed, and I don’t have a cat. I read the forty most recent high-star reviews and the forty most recent low-star reviews on the Thermo-Kitty Bed listing, and summarised them the same way as every review on this site. Low-star reviews arrive more slowly, so they reach back to November 2024; the high-star ones start in November 2025. That’s a sample, not a census; most ratings have no written review. Star percentages are Amazon’s. Nothing here is sponsored. The Amazon links on this page are affiliate links: as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you.

The K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed is a round, high-sided cat bed with a 4-watt heater tucked inside the cushion. It has no switch and no dial: you plug it in, and a thermostat warms the cushion when your cat lies on it. When I checked the listing on 21 October 2026, it had 6,998 ratings and a 4.5 average: 78% five stars and 10% four stars, against 8% one or two stars combined.

That missing switch explains most of what follows about this K&H heated cat bed. It’s why owners call it safe to leave plugged in all winter, and it’s also why the biggest complaint in the low-star reviews is “it doesn’t get warm”. This K&H heated cat bed review covers what owners love, why an empty bed feels cold, which size to pick, and the packaging problem worth knowing about.

What owners love about it

Cats move in and don’t leave. This is the strongest theme in the high-star reviews I read. Owners say their cat won’t get out of it, hasn’t left it all winter, or now sleeps there instead of on the owner’s bed. One cat that hated every other cat bed took to it at once. Several owners with two cats ended up buying a second bed because the cats kept fighting over the first.

Older cats seem to benefit most. About one in five of the high-star reviews I read mention a senior, arthritic or ill pet: a 16-year-old cat, a cat diagnosed with cancer that has barely left it since, an “old lady kitty” with sore joints, and an elderly chihuahua whose owner thinks it helps with his aches. The listing pitches it for arthritic pets too, and this group is where the praise is warmest.

Warm, not hot. Owners describe the warmth as gentle and say they feel safe leaving it plugged in. One owner bought it to get their cat off a radiator that was too hot for him. Another shared a thermal photo: about 85°F on the bed in a 50°F garage. K&H’s own product page describes the same pet-activated heater, and K&H says the surface warms to about 102°F with a pet on it.

It lasts. Some of the most convincing reviews are from repeat buyers: one owner has bought this model several times over 15 years, another has had two since about 13 years ago, and others report three and five years of daily use. The cover unzips, and owners like that the bed goes in the washing machine once the heater is taken out.

Why it feels cold when you test it

This is the most useful part of this K&H heated cat bed review. About half of the low-star reviews I read say the bed doesn’t get warm, or barely does. Some owners felt nothing after an hour; others felt only a faint warmth if they pressed hard.

K&H heated cat bed review: listing image showing the empty bed at room temperature and the bed warm with a cat in it

From the listing: the heater only warms the bed when a pet is in it, and an empty bed feels like room temperature.

The listing explains part of this: an empty K&H heated cat bed stays at or just above room temperature, so it won’t feel warm to your hand. K&H includes a test: lay a pillow on the bed and check under it after a while. Several high-star owners mention exactly this. One put a pillow on it and found the pillow really warm where it touched; another says it takes a few minutes, so don’t panic.

Still, not every complaint is a misunderstanding. Some low-star owners say they ran the pillow test, one with a heavy 30-pound pillow, and still felt nothing. A few think the thick cushion soaks up the heat, including one owner of hairless Sphynx cats who found the floor warmer than the top. So run the test as soon as it arrives, while you can still return it. If the pillow is warm, the bed is working.

One more tip from a five-star owner: don’t take the heater out and wrap it in something thin, like a T-shirt, to make it feel warmer. They tried it with a cat who refused the bed and found it far too hot. Use it inside the bed, as instructed.

Small or large?

K&H heated cat bed review: listing image of the Small 16-inch Thermo-Kitty Bed, 6 inches tall, 4 watts, indoor use only

The Small size, from the listing: 16 inches across, 6-inch sides, 4 watts, indoor use.

The listing says the Small 16-inch K&H heated cat bed suits cats under 15 pounds that sleep curled up, and the Large 20-inch suits cats over 15 pounds or cats that stretch out. Owners mostly agree: two 12-pound cats and a 15-pound “big boy” fit their beds well, and some two-cat homes share a Large.

Size is also the one thing Amazon’s review summary marks as mixed. One owner measured their Small at about 13 to 14 inches across the outside, and another says it was too snug for an 8-pound cat. If your cat sprawls, go Large. One Large owner notes that its heater is the same size as the Small’s, so only the middle of the bigger bed warms up.

Worth knowing before you buy

It may arrive squashed. About a quarter of the low-star reviews I read say the bed came crammed into a small box and arrived square, triangular or creased, with sides that never sprang back. Even some happy owners mention it arrived “wonky” or a little smushed. Some owners didn’t mind; others returned it.

Some cats ignore it. About one in seven of the low-star reviews say their cat wouldn’t use it, even after weeks of trying. Several high-star owners say it took their cat a few days, or in one case months, to start using it, so give it some time.

A few stopped working. A handful of low-star owners say the heat stopped after a month or after a year. Two owners, one in each group, report the opposite: a bed that stayed warm with no pet in it. Either way, run the pillow test now and then.

It’s for indoors. The listing marks this K&H heated cat bed as indoor use only. A few owners used it in a garage, a catio or an outdoor cat house, but K&H sells separate outdoor-rated heated beds for that. As with any heated bed, keep the cord where a chewing cat can’t get at it, and check on a pet that can’t easily move off the heat.

New smell. Three low-star owners noticed a strong smell from the foam ring; one says it lasted even after washing.

The manufacturer’s video

I searched YouTube for owner videos of this exact bed. The ones I found had affiliate shopping links, so I’ve used K&H’s own short video instead. It’s a short sales video from the manufacturer, not a review: K&H’s case for heated beds for senior pets, featuring the Thermo-Kitty Bed.

K&H heated cat bed review: who it suits

Buy it if you have an older or arthritic cat, a cat that hunts down warm spots, or a chilly room, and you want something you can leave plugged in without settings or timers. The repeat buyers are the strongest argument for it.

Look elsewhere if you want a bed that feels warm to your hand, or heat you can turn up. A heating pad with a temperature dial suits that better. For a cat that needs warmth outdoors, choose an outdoor-rated bed.

Comparing options? My self warming vs heated cat bed comparison puts this bed next to a heating pad and a no-cord mat, and my guide to the best heated cat bed for senior cats covers what to do if your cat struggles with the 6-inch sides.

For most homes, this K&H heated cat bed review comes down to two things: test it with a pillow on day one, and give your cat a few days to find the warm spot. Current listing and price. More pet reviews.

Common questions

Why does my K&H heated cat bed feel cold?
An empty bed stays near room temperature by design; the heat comes on when a pet lies on it. Test it by laying a pillow on it, then feel under the pillow after a while. If it’s still cold, contact the seller while you can return it.

Is the K&H heated cat bed safe to leave plugged in?
The listing describes it as MET safety listed, 4 watts and thermostatically controlled, and several owners I read leave it plugged in all winter. Keep the cord away from chewers, and check now and then that it isn’t warm when empty.

Can I wash it?
Yes. The listing says the cover is removable and machine washable. Take the heater out first.

Can I use it outside?
The listing marks it as indoor use only. For a porch, garage or outdoor cat house, look for an outdoor-rated heated bed.

Is there a difference between Mocha and Sage?
Only the colour. They share one listing and one set of reviews; size is the choice that matters.
